This month we are going to be talking about how you can keep your dog safe during firework season. At this time of year, fireworks pose a great danger to our beloved canine companions.
To help you keep your dog safe, we have created a list of tips and tricks for you to follow and keep your dog safe this Halloween period.
Bring Them Inside
Even if your dog is already accustomed to being indoors, it's crucial to bring all your pets inside when fireworks are being set off.
Leaving your dog outside during fireworks can frighten them due to the loud noises and bright lights, increasing the chance they might get scared and run off. By keeping them indoors, they’ll be safe, warm, and under the watchful care of their amazing pawrents, ensuring they feel fully secure and protected.
Training
Training is vital throughout a dog's life for various reasons, particularly for events like this. If your pup has good recall and can follow instructions easily, they are less likely to come into harm's way during fireworks.
By using simple commands and training, you can keep them by your side and relax them if they are feeling anxious or stressed. Training is an invaluable lesson to teach your dog and will always come in useful.
Exercise
The more exhausted your dog is before the fireworks begin, the better. If you know when fireworks are scheduled in your area, make sure to take your dog out for an extended exercise session well in advance. This could include walking, playing, agility activities, or anything you both enjoy. It’s a good idea to make the session longer than usual to ensure your dog is tired. When you return home, your pup will likely feel relaxed and sleepy, making it less likely for the fireworks to disturb them.
A Safe Spot
Ensure your dog has a nice cosy spot in your home that they can return to if they are feeling scared or anxious. Make sure it is in a spot they are familiar with and contains a lot of their favourite things. Some items to include are:
Creating a safe space for your dog will encourage relaxation and comfort if they are anxious during fireworks. Another tip when creating this space is to avoid windows and outside facing doors. If your pup can see fireworks going off or hear them quite loudly this may cause further stress and anxiety.
Identification
Although you can take lots of measures to prevent your dog from spooking and running off, it is important to be prepared if they do somehow slip past you. While microchipping is always crucial to have, it is even more important during events such as fireworks.
It is important to remember to update the information on their identification – whether it be a collar or a microchip. This makes it a lot easier to reunite them with you if they do find a way to run off.
